Childrens Backpacks Materials I
Choosing the best materials for your children's
backpacks!
Childrens backpacks come in various designs and also materials.
The materials
may not appear to play an important role in the backpack's function;
however, there are subtle differences that you should be aware of.
Canvas
Commonly,
backpacks, especially children's backpack are predominantly
made using canvas. Canvas is the only non-synthetic material used for
making backpacks.
Canvas is in fact, cotton. Much like denim material, cotton is tightly
woven to make canvas. Canvas, being cotton, absorbs and releases
moisture very easily. If your child gets caught in a heavy downpour,
books and shoes in the backpack are likely to be wet.
Normally an inner lining made of polyester or vinyl is used to water
proof the backpack. This 'breathing' quality of
canvas makes it more comfortable on the back and cause less sweatiness.
Non-water proof canvas backpacks should be used if the pack will be
used to contain used clothes or dirty shoes after a camping trip, else
you be in for a nasty surprise!
In terms of
colour or print, patterns and images on your child's
backpack is very durable on canvas. Colours may fade over time (like
your cotton print shirt), but they never flake off in bits and pieces.
Nylon
Nylon is a
synthetic material made from petroleum products and is one of the most
versatile fabric materials available today.
Most cotton products, such as socks and shirts are a blend of part
nylon, part cotton to improve the material's quality. There
are various types of nylon, depending on their polymer structure and
the monomers used. But in general, are light but very tough and durable
materials, used to make seat beats, bullet proof vests and parachutes.
Used in
backpacks, nylons give the pack good weathering resistance and its
elastic allows the backpack to be stretched somewhat and returns to the
original shape and size for a snug fit. Nylon, due to its synthetic
nature is highly resistant to insects, fungi and many chemicals. This
makes nylon backpacks easy to wash and simple to store away for long
periods of time.
However, like
all petroleum based products, nylon is degraded by sunlight. Exposure
to high intensity of sunlight over long periods of time causes nylon to
slowly lose its superior properties and also discolouration.
Cordura
One nylon
product has been popular to establish a niche name of its own among
backpack materials. Compared to common nylon products, cordura is more
resistance towards sunlight and lasts longer. It also has improved
colour qualities; colour is less likely to run on cordura fabric.
Cordura is also of better abrasion resistance compared to common nylon
or other backpack materials for that matter, making them an excellent
choice for hiking and camping trips. |
